Terrorist killed, two injured in raid
One militant was killed and two others were injured in an exchange of fire with Peshawar anti-terrorism police unit and security forces in Mattani area on the outskirts of Peshawar on Tuesday.
At a press conference at CTD headquarters, Peshawar CTD SSP Kashif Aftab Abbasi said they have received information about the presence of some criminals in Mattani area of the provincial capital, who are planning attacks in town. He said police and security forces in Peshawar CTD jointly raided the militant compound and then opened fire on the police. During the firing, one militant was killed and two others wounded while three of his colleagues managed to escape using the darkness.
The SSP told reporters that the culprits were members of a terrorist group – Shina Group – and had been wanted in various criminal activities including attack on a checkpoint in Adizai, money laundering, graffiti, and distribution of prohibited clothing leaflets. He said the city had survived a major disaster, adding that measures had been taken against the militant group.
The CTD also claimed to have recovered 5kg explosives, Kalashnikovs and hand grenades from the militants. He said they attacked Customs forces on May 29 in the Mattani area and wounded four of their personnel. Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) recorded 11.9 per cent reduction in terrorism by April 2023 due to CTD preventive measures through detection. According to the CTD report for the four months – January to April – terrorist incidents decreased by 11.9 per cent in April.
In the first four months of 2023, 309 cases of terrorism were registered, of which 213 were traced and 124 were arrested. Around 54 proclamations of offenders (POs) including 15 carrying cash heads were recorded compared to 42 POs in the same period in 2022.Meanwhile, 711 intelligence operations (IBOs) were conducted in which 158 militants were arrested, the report said.
In 39 encounters with terrorists, 62 of them were deterred and 53 attempts to commit terrorism foiled through IBOs where arms and ammunition were recovered in large quantities (53 cases) while 81 accused were detained. Items recovered included 47 kilograms of explosives, 150 hand grenades, one suicide jacket, 105 firearms and 2,822 rounds of ammunition. Confidence was obtained in eight cases in which 11 terrorists were convicted due to successful investigations.
