New Delhi: Former Andhra Pradesh chief minister Karan Kumar Reddy joined the BJP on Friday, becoming the second former South Indian Congress leader to switch sides in as many days, after Anil Antony, son of Kerala Congress veteran AK Antony .Reddy, who was the last chief minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh before the formation of state in 2014, resigned from the Congress in March 2023 due to differences with the party leadership.

Reddy’s decision to join the BJP comes in the wake of next year’s assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh, where the ruling YSR Congress and the main opposition Telugu Desman Party are locked in a fierce rivalry. The move could tip the balance in favor of the BJP, which is hoping to make inroads in the state.

The 62-year-old politician had resigned from the Congress once back in 2014, after a split in Andhra Pradesh, and started his own party ‘Jai’. However, he failed to make a significant electoral impact in the elections of 2014. He later rejoined the Congress in 2018, but remained politically inactive for some time.

Hailing from, Reddy is expected to strengthen the BJP’s presence in the region where it holds considerable influence. He may also be cast as a possible chief ministerial candidate for the BJP, which is trying to emerge as the third party in the state.
