ISLAMABAD: The World Athletics Championships in Budapest, which begin on Saturday, are headlined by established stars like Karsten Warholm and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, but the spotlight also calls to others a year away from the Paris Olympics.

The home country of the 22-year-old Julien Alfred is St. Lucia, an unexpected place for a future sprint champion. But Alfred have the skills to become the first woman since Ukraine’s Zhanna Pintusevich-Block in 2001 to win the world 100-meter championship outside of Jamaica or the United States.

She proved the potential she displayed by taking second place in the Youth Olympic Games in 2018 by winning the Commonwealth Games silver medal in front of two-time Olympic 100-meter champion Elaine Thompson-Herat.

Given that a close aunt of hers passed away shortly before the Games, the YOG medal was a testament to her character and should serve her well. The 29-year-old, who is the incumbent 200-meter champion, heads to Budapest.

Usain Bolt won his first Olympic 100-meter victory when Jaydon Hibbert was just three years old. Although the triple jump lacks the glitter of the sprints, the global under-20 champion has the potential to be just as dominant in the competition. The 18-year-old will face a significant challenge at the championships, but he has had an outstanding 2023 thus far, breaking.

Despite switching to them rather late after a fruitful 400-meter career, this is the case. In the one-lap race at the 2015–2019 World Championships and the 2016 Olympics, she took home a bronze medal .The 29-year-old, who is the incumbent 200-meter champion, heads to Budapest with the goal of unseating the supposedly ageless Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce as Jamaica’s top sprinter. She enters them coming off of strong showings in Monaco and her national championships.
