Although many people resort to beaches and lakes to cool off and relax on July Fourth, some skiers and snowboarders are spending the summer holiday on the icy slopes of Mammoth Mountain in California.

The Sierra Nevada ski area remained accessible to skiers and snowboarders in early July, and while it’s not uncommon for the resort to be open during the winter months, what drew the attention of those who worked there was the abundance of snow still available.

“What makes this season unique is how deep the base is at this time of year.” “Coverage across the mountain is excellent,” said resort spokesperson Tim LeRoy in an email to AccuWeather.

The coverage over the mountain was not only outstanding, but it appeared to be more like snow coverage during the winter months based on a video recorded in mid-June. Even as the summer months arrived, the resort had plenty of snow for skiers and snowboarders.

Mammoth Mountain, with a base depth of 35 to 105 inches, was one of three ski resorts remaining open in the United States on July 4. Palisades Tahoe in Olympic Valley, California, and Timberline Lodge on Mt. Hood in Oregon were the other two resorts.

By early afternoon on the Fourth of July, temperatures atop the mountain had reached 63 degrees Fahrenheit, while the town of Mammoth Lakes had reached 72 degrees.

This season’s snowfall was “record breaking,” according to LeRoy, with 715 inches measured at the main lodge and over 900 inches at the top. The previous record was set in the winter of 2010-2011, when 668.5 inches of snow fell at the main lodge.
