ISLAMABAD: By signing a consultant agreement for Rs776.3 million, the Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) has made an important step toward progressing the Kurram Tangi Dam Project Stage-II. This significant contract has been given to a joint venture made up of four companies—three from Pakistan and one from Turkey—with DOLSAR serving as the consortium’s leader.

Detailed engineering design, the production of an updated PC-I, a PC-I for land acquisition and resettlement planning, and the creation of tender documents for the project are all included in the scope of the consultation services. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is providing financial support for the 22-month consulting agreement.

On Friday, the contract was signed at WAPDA House by Cem Aker, the joint venture’s international projects coordinator, and Muhammad Shafiq Bhettani, the joint venture’s chief engineer and project director for the Kurram Tangi Dam. Key WAPDA representatives, including Jamil Akhtar, Member (Power) WAPDA, and several General Managers in charge of the project’s executive.

Stage-I of the Kurram Tangi Dam Project, which will irrigate 16,380 acres of land and produce about 18.4 MW of energy, has already been made progress by WAPDA. In the North Waziristan District of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Stage-II of the Kurram Tangi Dam Project will be built on the Kurram River. It will be located about 32 kilometers north of Bannu City and 14 kilometers upstream of the Kurram Garhi Headworks.

This stage is planned to have an installed power generation capacity of 65 megawatts (MW) and a gross water storage capacity of 1.2 million acre-feet (MAF).

In addition to generating electricity, the project will improve water availability to an extra 278,000 acres of existing land and enable irrigation on 38,000 acres of new land.
