
Brazil takes stand against racism with all-black kit

Brazil In a striking gesture, the Brazil men’s international made history by donning all-black for the first time in its 109-year history in a friendly against Guinea in Spain on Saturday as part of their strong anti-racism campaign. Before the match at Barcelona’s Espanyol stadium, players from both teams showed their solidarity by kneeling or sitting on the pitch and observing a moment of silence.
Brazil played the first 45 minutes of the match in black shirts, shorts and socks, then reverted to their traditional yellow jerseys after the break. The slogan of the campaign was clearly visible on the front of the shirts: “Com Racismo nao tem jogo”, i.e. “Racism is not to be played with”. Approved by FIFA, the sport’s governing body, the campaign is an initiative of the Brazilian federation to fight racism in football and society. The association released a statement on Saturday reiterating their unwavering commitment to ending racism.
Vinícius Jr., one of Brazil’s outstanding players and Real Madrid striker, is constantly the target of racist abuse. The Spanish La Liga reported ten cases involving the Brazilian striker to the prosecutor’s office in the 2022-2023 season. FIFA President Gianni Infantino recently visited the Brazilian delegation and expressed his full support for their anti-racism campaign.
Brazil prevailed against Guinea with a 4-1 victory thanks to goals from Joelinton, Rodrygo, Eder Militão and Vinícius. Guinea scored the only goal through Guirassy.
Vinícius had the honor of wearing the iconic No. 10 shirt for the first time, which is historically associated with the legendary Pele, as confirmed by the Brazilian Federation. Infantino invited Vinícius to join FIFA’s anti-racism committee, which is made up of players who help develop strategies to tackle discriminatory behavior in football.
Brazil’s upcoming friendly is against Senegal in Lisbon, Portugal on Tuesday. The team continues to support its anti-racism campaign and reaffirms its commitment to fighting racism and promoting inclusion in sport. This important moment in Brazilian football history is a testament to their determination and continued efforts.
