104 lightyears away and mostly composed of carbon and metallic oxygen, the white dwarf star uncovered by astronomers is a rare find in deep space that may eventually cool down to become a “cosmic diamond,” according to Independent.
When a star’s life, like the sun’s, comes about to end, it transforms into a white dwarf, an incredibly hot object, with some of them maybe slowly hardening and crystallising.
Astronomers have identified one of these objects that has cooled and may be on the verge of undergoing a “cosmic diamond” transformation.
The white star was reported by researchers in a study that has not yet been peer-reviewed.
In their paper, which was approved for publishing in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, they stated:
