Fazl demands CJP’s resignation

Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) President Maulana Fazlur Rahman has launched a scathing attack on Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Atta Bandial, accusing him of isolating the Supreme Court with controversial judgments and demanding his resignation.
In a tweet on Saturday, the leader of the opposition coalition accused the chief justice of allegedly mishandling the country’s most prestigious body, the Supreme Court (SC), which has created local and national crisis.
The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief also said that the only solution is for Chief Justice Bandial to resign from office.
Fazl also pointed out that the parliament is the apex body of the country and the alleged misconduct of the chief justice has put the institution in a difficult situation. He asked Chief Justice Bandial to resign immediately without any delay to restore public confidence in the judiciary.
The ongoing dispute between the federal government and Chief Justice Bandial appears to have escalated to an irreconcilable point as the former is calling for his resignation.
The request came in light of what the government considered to be “controversial” decisions taken by the chief justice, particularly his recent direction to the Election Commission to hold elections in Punjab on May 14.
In a decisive press conference in which he summoned the CJP and two other judges, Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb on Friday said that CJ Bandial’s position has become problematic, especially after the statements of Justice Athar Minilab in the Supreme Court case Punjab Elections.
As such, he asked the Chief Justice to resign immediately.
