
300 CAA janitors pay price for

KARACHI: The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) on Friday sacked 300 cleaners working in detention after they staged protests at Karachi and other airports demanding permanent jobs. According to a statement issued by the CAA, contractual employees working at Jinnah Airport have been dismissed.
“It is hereby informed that the service level contract of Cleaning and Sanitation Department at JIAP (Jinnah International Airport), Karachi has been approved by the competent authority namely DG CAA. Therefore, all cleaners employed on a protective basis are excluded from 31 March 2023.”Retained contract workers of CAA staged protests and sit-ins for nearly 15 days because they were not made permanent.
Protesters say about 2,600 workers are on hold and 400 have been fired, calling on authorities to make them permanent. Meanwhile, CAA said the new employees hired under the SLA will become permanent.
A special committee of the National Assembly also ordered the CAA management to eliminate the contractual mechanism. Protests took place at Karachi, Islamabad, Quetta and Multan airports where they were present and engaged.
Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Asia Bhutto Zadora also participated in the protest. Asia listened to the problems faced by the workers. He expressed his solidarity and promised to fully support their cause, adding that the PPP will play its role in restoring jobs and making them permanent.
